Great infographic that reinforces what I learned as a Director of Ecommerce. Email is critical. Email made more money than any other channel and not just by a little bit. Email’s margin, net net will above 30%, was well above its nearest channel rival (organic SEO). PPC made no money but kept the list health. Social was nascent and print was dying. Email is what kept the doors open and WE controlled email (not Google).
This made email the great diversification too. If things went south with any other channel email stayed rock solid. In fact we could use email as a stopgap. We could make the bleeding stop by using email as a bandage (though we had to be careful about this too or fatigue the list).
The other dimension and something I just wrote about extensively on Scoop.it is EMAIL IS THE FUTURE of Web 3.0. Email is controlled by personas and segments and it uses creative fired by LOGIC. Web 3.0 won’t have “pages” as we know them know. Nested what-if logic will determine what to fire in real time.
If you thought OUCH at the server demand of such a world you are correct and the only vendors who know how to remotely move so much demand across so many servers is email vendors. Combine the server backend power with already being half way to the see the behavior fire the creative and email is the future of website design.
